Ella

If my great Aunt Betty saw this photo, she would say “Oh now isn’t she precious” in the warmest of voices.  Five month old Ella is really darling. All the way down to her chunky thighs. She’s at the point where she can sit up for a second and then barrels over to the side, hence the leopard print support behind her.   We had all sorts of cute clothing options pulled out to try on, and as usual, these kiddos look best in the buff.

Three boys

I photographed this family last year and had a great time. This year’s session was just as entertaining.  How can it not be with twin boys and a spunky little one?  Some leaves, horsing around, and we even got their Dad to be in some unplanned family shots (which I’m keeping private in case they use it for their holiday card).

Emma

A belated sneak peak for darling Miss Emma and her family.  I have more of Emma smiling but I love catching a child’s polite expression that says “Um, photographer lady, I don’t think you’re making any sense.”

Sweet Sembete

We’re back!  Actually, we’ve been back for three weeks but it has taken me awhile to get a handle of our new family of four.  We feel so lucky to have this spunky little girl in our lives.  She’s doing amazingly well and is picking up English quickly.  Sembete was raised in rural Ethiopia where people spend hours fetching their water every day.  It is fascinating to watch this 3 year old experience American life.  Windshield wipers, the beeps from the toaster, sounds of sirens, chocolate, playgrounds, escalators, scissors – it’s all very novel to her.

Ethiopia is a loving country burdened with extreme poverty.  A friend of mine mentioned that you can’t come back from Ethiopia without wanting to save the whole country.  I can’t say enough about the staff at Wide Horizon’s orphange:  the nannies who care for these orphans are angelic, and the guards who also double as nannies/soccer goalies/rooftop ball retrievers are saints.  It was reassuring to know the children 5yrs and younger all had families waiting to come get them.  Most of the kids who were 8, 11, 14 have been waiting for 1+ years. If anyone is interested in adopting an older child, there are some sweethearts over there.

I haven’t had my camera out much these first few weeks but I did bring it with us for Sembete’s second ride on the swings.  She gets that I am often holding a camera . . . today she used Owen’s interlocking card thingies to build something with random holes in it.  She then held it up to her eye and said “Mammi – foto!” and made a clicking sound.

I took this photo of Sembete at the orphanage in Ethiopia. It was our third day with her – and the first day she started being comfortable around me (i.e. smiling).  She was playing peek-a-boo from behind a chair.

Yellow “chama”. That same day I traced Semi’s foot onto a piece of paper and walked up the street to the corner stall where another mom and I dug through piles of used shoes imported from China. I returned with two options in hand and was thrilled to see her swoon for these. Thankfully they fit her like a glass slipper. Shoes-0475sm

I didn’t have my camera with me for her first playground experience here in the states, which I regretted at first but then was ok with.  Some things are just sacred and best left to memory alone.  Here’s swing ride #2.

We’re great. Smitten. Girls are fun. Hope you all are well!
